Before I Learned Mindfulness, I Learned the Value of Solitude
One Quote - Two Habits - Three Prompts
Welcome to Micro-Mindfulness Minutes, weekly field-tested resets, reflection prompts, and tiny habits to help busy women find calm, clarity, and steadiness in the middle of real life.
Hi yโall,
Iโve been thinking about my parents a lot these past summer days.
In the evenings, after working in the yard or cutting the grass, my dad would settle onto the backyard swing. It was his place of solitude at the end of the day. My mom had her own place of solitude each morning, sitting in her favorite chair, with a lighted candle and her prayers before the rest of the house came alive.
They taught me the value of stillness, slowing down, taking a pause, and being alone with my thoughts and with God in silence.
Growing up, I thought that was what people did.
Looking back, I realize they were showing me something much more profound. They made room each day to listen, to reflect, and to let silence become part of the rhythm of ordinary life.
Years later, those quiet moments found me again during my years as a nun.
They continue to shape the way I live and the way I coach today.
I have learned that solitude is less about finding more time and more about noticing the moments already waiting for us. A few quiet minutes can become the beginning of a more present life.
Looking back, I realize my first teachers of mindfulness were my mother and father. They didnโt use that word. They simply lived it.
Where do you find moments of silence in your time or time alone with yourself that nourish you soul, the deep well of your inner spirit?
Letโs begin.
Micro-Mindfulness Minutes
1. Quote to Ponder
A meaningful quote helps steady a racing mind by offering a single clear truth or idea to hold on to when everything feels scattered.
Cultivate personal rituals of solitude. Learn to be with it all. Become immense inside. Set your prayers on fire.
~ Mary Ellen Lough
Reflection and journaling for this week: Solitude in the middle of life
Solitude has a way of gathering us back together.
In the middle of a full life, deadlines, people who need you, a calendar packed edge to edge, a few private minutes become one of the most generous gifts you give yourself.
Micro-mindfulness begins with one pause, one breath, or one quiet moment of noticing whatโs true right now.
Small rituals like these build something larger over time: an inner life spacious enough to hold joy and grief in the same open hand.
Thatโs where clarity grows. Thatโs where presence is your power. Thatโs where your prayers, however you define them, rise alive within you.
What waits for you within solitude is room to feel it all and the steadiness to carry it well.
Your Mindful Journal Prompt Today
What small ritual of solitude would help you feel steady today?
Write about one quiet moment you could welcome into your day, and notice what opens when you give yourself room to feel it all.
2. Mindful Habits
These habits ease the constant pressure to keep going by giving your body a small, reliable place to land between moments.
Try one actionable micro-mindfulness habit this week that takes less than 10 minutes.
Watch a sunrise or a sunset and put your phone away. Donโt photograph it. Let this one be yours alone, just experienced.
Before a meal youโll eat alone, set the table nicely anyway. Cloth napkin if you have one. A candle. Your solitude deserves ceremony too.
3. Journal Prompts
These prompts help release the buildup of unspoken thoughts, so they stop circling and start settling.
Take a moment to reflect on your day before journaling. Be mindful of what catches your attention. (Choose one that resonates with you.)
Journal Prompt: If solitude was a teacher, what lesson is it trying to offer you right now?
Journal Prompt: When you are really listening to yourself or to another person, what does that feel like in your body? How is it different from just waiting for your turn to speak?
Journal Prompt: Solitude is a fueling station. When did you last refuel in silence? What did you come back with?
A Year of Presence in 2026, One Sentence at a Time
This habit is a year-long, simple journaling challenge rooted in micro-mindfulness, the art of paying attention in tiny, doable ways that fit into the cracks of real life.

Your response might be:
One word, a few bullet points, or a sentence.
A doodle or a sketch.
Or even a single photograph that captures what caught your attention that day.
If you miss a day, start where you are or begin at any time.
Hereโs a summary of the journal prompts from this past week:
Day 187 - Where can I ease up?
Day 188 - What helps me slow down?
Day 189 - What brings ease to my nervous system?
Day 190 - What feels restorative?
Day 191 - What do I need a break from?
Day 192 - What feels playful?
Day 193 - What helps me feel free?
Which prompt resonated the most with you?
Solitude was how my parents returned, ready to meet the day, or end it, with a little more grace.
Micro-mindfulness is one small sacred moment at a time, on purpose, again and again. You already know how to do this.
May you discover one place this week where silence feels welcoming, where your soul has room to breathe, and where you remember the quiet strength that lives within you.
Thatโs all for this week.
Thanks for reading. I appreciate you being part of the journey.
See you next week.

Your parents' rhythm of solitude is the quiet kind of mindfulness I keep forgetting to protect. I am trying to build my day around one small pause instead of waiting for perfect conditions.
