What's Your Trigger? The 10 Seconds That Decide How You Show Up Today
One Quote - Two Habits - Three Prompts
Welcome to Micro-Mindfulness Minutes, weekly field-tested resets, reflection prompts, and tiny habits to help busy women find calm, clarity, and steadiness in the middle of real life.
Hi yโall,
I love the Summer Olympics, especially the track and field events.
Watch the sprinters and hurdlers in the seconds before a race.
They stand behind the blocks, still, with their eyes somewhere down the track, rehearsing the whole thing inside their own bodies.
That moment is the preparation. Those ten seconds are where they decide how they plan to run.
Then the starter calls them to their marks. They lower into the blocks, hands on the line, everything aligned.
Then comes the word set. Their feet press into the raised back of the blocks, their hips lift, and the whole body loads toward one direction.
Then the shot, and that stored energy propels them forward.
Your morning holds those same three beats: getting ready, getting set, and the trigger that sends you.
Most of us handle the first beat well. We set a meaningful intention over tea or coffee.
The trouble arrives at beat three, when the day fires off, and we go anywhere except where we intended to go.
So hereโs my question for you this week. What is your trigger, the sound or the object, that tells youย now is the time to be present?
Letโs begin.
Micro-Mindfulness Minutes
1. Quote to Ponder
A meaningful quote gives your thoughts one still point to settle around.
Process saves us from the poverty of our intentions.
~ Elizabeth King, American sculptor and writer (quoted in Seth Godin, The Practice: Shipping Creative Work, Portfolio / Penguin, 2020, p. 4)
Reflection and journaling for this week: What Carries an Intention
Elizabeth King is a sculptor.
She builds her figures from thousands of tiny, repeated decisions, so she knows what carries an intention through a long, ordinary day.
The process carries it.
Here is the part that took me years to understand. Mindfulness lives as a habit of process.
It has a system, with parts you can name and practice, the same way a sprinter practices a start thousands of times. Body, mind, heart, and spirit turn the same direction. Then an environment helps: the journal already open or the mug already out.
In the convent, the morning prayer routine did that work for me. On the mornings I woke up scattered, the routine walked me to prayer, and something in me woke up along the way.
At Microsoft, I kept the same rhythm in miniature. I used a trigger: both feet flat on the floor, one breath, before I said hello to the next room.
Your intention names the direction. Your trigger sends you there.
Your Mindful Journal Prompt Today
Which small, repeatable practice already carries me, even on the mornings I wake up scattered?
Write about one practice you have kept longer than your motivation for it, and what it has given you.
2. Mindful Habits
These habits give your body and mind a small, reliable place to settle in the middle of a full day.
Try one actionable micro-mindfulness habit this week that takes less than 10 minutes.
Take the set position before you open your laptop. Plant both feet flat on the floor, press down through your heels for three slow breaths, and name one word you want this day to run on. I do this while waiting for the tea kettle to boil, so that my whole being through my spine remembers what it is here for.
Choose one trigger and let it do the work all week. Pick something that already happens on its own, the seatbelt buckle or the first phone chime, and attach a single breath to it. Mine is the whistling sound of the tea kettle, and by the time I turn off the stove, I am present in my own body.
3. Journal Prompts
These prompts help release the buildup of unspoken thoughts, so they stop circling and start settling.
Take a moment to reflect on your day before journaling. Be mindful of what catches your attention. (Choose one that resonates with you.)
Journal Prompt: How do I want to show up today, in one sentence I could say out loud?
Journal Prompt: What in my environment already helps me get set, and what would I add tonight?
Journal Prompt: Where did my day fire off this week while my intention stayed behind in the blocks?
A Year of Presence in 2026, One Sentence at a Time
This habit is a year-long, simple journaling challenge rooted in micro-mindfulness, the art of paying attention in tiny, doable ways that fit into the cracks of real life.
I share a ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ถ๐น๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ-๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ท๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ป๐ฎ๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ in the ๐ก๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ผ๐ณ ๐บ๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ฏ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ to carry with you throughout the day.
August is about boundaries and energy.
Your response might be:
One word, a few bullet points, or a sentence.
A doodle or a sketch.
Or even a single photograph that captures what caught your attention that day.
If you miss a day, start where you are or begin at any time.
Hereโs a summary of the journal prompts from this past week:
Day 208 - What invites me to pause?
Day 209 - What am I enjoying without rushing?
Day 210 - What feels balanced?
Day 211 - What do I want more time for?
Day 212 - What lesson about rest do I carry forward?
Day 213 - What protects my energy today?
Day 214 - Where did I need a boundary?
Which prompt resonated the most with you?
May you meet tomorrow morning with your feet under you and your intention within reach.
May you find one ordinary cue that is enough to bring you home to yourself all week.
And may you trust that a single steady minute is plenty to begin with.
Thatโs all for this week.
Thanks for reading. I appreciate you being part of the journey.
See you next week.
